Abstract

The main feature of an essay is its focus on accuracy and truthfulness, as well as a lively, artistic depiction of reality. An essay combines elements of reportage and artistic narration, which allows the author not only to convey information, but also to create an emotional perception of an event or object. Unlike a short story, which is a work of fiction with a fictional plot, an essay is based on real facts. A short story, as a rule, includes fiction, the construction of fictional characters and events, while in an essay the author focuses on reality, striving to reflect it in the most reliable form. An essay can be freer in style, often using elements of narration, dialogue, description, but always remains tied to reality. Thus, an essay and a short story, despite similarities in narrative form, perform different functions in literature and journalism, and it is important to understand these differences when writing or analyzing works.
